Aswan, Egypt's southernmost city, offers a gentler, more relaxed pace along the Nile. The Aswan High Dam, an engineering marvel completed in the 1960s, created Lake Nasser and protects Egypt from Nile floods. The Unfinished Obelisk reveals how ancient Egyptians carved colossal monuments from granite. Philae Temple, reached by motorboat, is a romantic island sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Isis, relocated to Agilkia Island when the dam was built. Optional excursions to Abu Simbel — the twin rock temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari — are available from Aswan.
